 Insect Shield® Repellent Technology Launches Camp Apparel Program to Help Protect Campers/Staff from Insects

SEATTLE, WA – Insect Shield has announced development of a new business initiative specifically designed for camps, enabling them to offer Insect Shield protective apparel to their campers and staff. Insect Shield, a member of the American Camp Association, plans to unveil this program at upcoming ACA Conferences in Orlando and Atlantic City. 

The Insect Shield camp apparel program offers bug protection for campers and camp staff, in hopes of helping to provide an improved camp experience, while also offering peace of mind for parents—knowing that their children are protected from insects while away at camp. Parents are increasingly aware of the dangers to their children from insect bites that can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Eastern equine encephalitis.

 Many of these diseases are spreading rapidly and parents are anxious to protect their children, particularly when they are away from home. Insect Shield’s long-lasting clothing treatment—proven to last through 70 washings—is an excellent solution with many advantages: Insect Shield apparel requires no re-application, has no potential for overuse or misuse, is EPA-registered, and can be worn by children of any age.  

Thomas Mather, Ph.D., director of the URI Center for Vector-borne Disease was instrumental in getting the Insect Shield camp apparel program started, “As a researcher on the subject of diseases carried by ticks and mosquitoes, such as Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, I am very concerned about the increases we have seen in recent years in the number of cases of these diseases. In response to my request, Insect Shield has created a line of protective camp clothing with repellency built-in that lasts through 70 washings, an ideal way of protecting children while at camp and when they return home.” In one study, Mather and his team showed a 5-times lower likelihood of a blacklegged tick bite on subjects wearing repellent-treated shoes, socks, shorts and t-shirt. 

The new Insect Shield camp program online store www.insectshield.com/camp makes protective clothing available to camps, camp staff, and parents, with the option of customized camp logos. For the first phase of the program, the Insect Shield assortment consists of t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, polos, and accessories such as hats, socks and bandanas, for both youth and adults.
