Insect Shield Outfits Zambia National Malaria Survey Team
The latest global health effort from Insect Shield is a uniform program designed specifically for members of the Zambia National Malaria Indicator Survey Team. The Zambia Ministry of Health, together with support from several Roll Back Malaria partners, is conducting a national household survey to help evaluate the progress in scaling up malaria control interventions nationwide. The survey is meant to help inform national and local authorities about the need for improved malaria prevention and care in Zambia.
The survey teams in the Luangwa and Lusaka districts of Zambia have been outfitted in Insect Shield Repellent Apparel to protect them from potential disease-carrying insects while conducting survey efforts in the field.

Summer Health Alert
Experts believe that several factors are likely to make 2008 a big year for ticks and mosquitoes.
Midwest Flooding is Expected to Bring a Flood of Mosquitoes
As the high water subsides from the spring floods in the Midwest there's another flood you and your family need to know about. All of that standing water in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and many other Midwestern states, unfortunately means a flood of mosquitoes for summer '08. Experts predict that all insects that live part of their life cycle in water, like mosquitoes, will increase in numbers this year.
Housing Slump Causes Serious Mosquito Problems
Hundreds of the thousands of homes that are being abandoned due to the property crash are left behind with undrained swimming pools, which have become a massive breeding ground for blood-sucking mosquitoes. Especially in cities like Las Vegas, where land values have plummeted and million-dollar mansions with in-ground pools and outdoor Jacuzzis are being abandoned--ideal places for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. This phenomenon has also been reported in Arizona and California.
Nuts to Ticks
Thomas Mather, University of Rhode Island professor of entomology, predicted an early tick season and a high tick-borne-disease infection rate in Rhode Island, this year, due to several ecological factors. He said that, among other things, a large acorn crop in '06 may have led to an "exceptionally high" rodent population in '07, and, "Since mice serve as carriers of the Lyme disease pathogen, immature deer ticks last year had lots of potentially infected blood meals. The result is that people are more likely to encounter ticks that can transmit Lyme and other diseases."
