Mountain to Sea Trail

Project Lyme
Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail build, maintain, protect and promote the 1175-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail that crosses North Carolina from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smokies to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks.

Last year, Friends’ volunteers put in over 36,000 hours of trail work, both maintaining the miles already built and breaking new trail. With that much manpower working in tick-prone areas, the partnership with Insect Shield is greatly beneficial to help prevent tick borne disease while volunteers are doing such important work.

Friends also helps hikers get out on the trail – from thru-hikers to casual strollers – and recommends that all MST-users learn tick prevention strategies.

“The battle against bugs can be ongoing for day and long-distance MST hikers and our trail workers,” said Kate Dixon, Friends of the MST’s executive director. “That makes Insect Shield such a good fit.”
